    A repeat history lesson
This is my second time listening all the way through and it is so informative. Yes, a bit of added drama, however I enjoyed the host and the show. I recommend this show to many people when they don’t know what to listen to.

    Lovely!!
This is a terrific podcast! I love history, and this narrator is captivating. I hope Becky Milligan does a million more of these stories.

    Engrossing podcast!
A really fun lesson, the story is told in a very engaging and clear manner. I blew through the whole thing in two days! The narrator is a joy to listen to, the mystery very interesting. The only note I would leave is that this is really about coming up with the author’s favorite hypothesis on what happened, and not about proving anything. I think if it were phrased in that way from the onset, it would have been more cohesive. For example, dismissing suicide as an option because a son doesn’t think it’s possible isn’t very fact based. However, if this is one person‘s evaluation of an historical event, then I think it’s fine for her to say this just doesn’t make sense to me and isn’t the most likely option IMO. I hope there’s more coming in the future!!

    I’m not much of a history buff…
I’m not much of a WW2 nut, and I don’t usually listen to crime podcasts, but this one piqued my interest and I was hooked. As an American, I know little about this part of the world. It is laid out nicely- I would recommend this one.

    Documentary or Story Telling
I’m deducting a point because I kept thinking I was listening to a documentary type podcast only to hit a turn when what was just said was part of the story, but not fact. If I kept my mind connected that some facts were theory’s only, than the production, hosts, interviews… we’re all well told… minus some repeat statements I was over hearing.

    Terrific!
Stunning podcast! Kept me coming back for more! And the intro music made me feel like I was watching a HBO drama series. Amazing!

    Very entertaining
I wasn’t really interested in learning about this King until I started listening to the podcast. The banter between Becky and EJ is hilarious!

    Fascinating
A fascinating story very well told with lots of twists and turns and suspense. Great listening! Great music!

    Too repetitive!
Such a good story but they repeat the same ideas over and over. It feels like they try too hard to make this story more mysterious than it is. It's a good story but I did not like how it was told. Each episode could have been so much shorter.
  • Shorty433
    Amazing!!!
Such a strange story that I can’t believe I never knew! The storytelling was so wonderfully smart and fun! The last “scene” gave me such a lovely image of the King and his children, I shall never forget it!

    Fantastic!
Full disclosure: I originally put this on thinking it would be good background noise during work. But instead I was sucked into this absolutely fascinating piece of history I didn’t know anything about. The reporting is wonderful, and the storytelling is first-rate.

Did Churchill murder the king of Bulgaria?!
Enthralling!!! Expertly told! I can’t stop listening!
  • Pilar 2024
    Yes, riveting!
Terrific effort - so obscure & so resonant at the same time. They used to kill each other off all the time back then & how could we have forgotten all this?! And biscuits? C'mon! I haven't the words to thank you for all the mesmerizing time I've spent with the royals of Bulgaria - that you found the King alive with his sister is one more reminder that too many stories die from neglect. Bless you for your dogged sometimes annoying persistence. Bravo!

    Fascinating story
I love history and the historical perspective of events. This was a very interesting story and so glad I listened!

    Fascinating history.
I was riveted by this podcast! The host was so charming, the story was truly fascinating, and the ending was so satisfying. The last episode and the part about Simeon and Marie Louise returning to Bulgaria after their exile gave me chills. I loved every bit of it!

    Well done! Engaging story!

    Disappointing “Journalism”
I grinded through the entire series hoping it would have an interesting fact based definitive conclusion. It felt like a puff peace for and little known county and their even lesser known royal family.

    Great!
A great story, a great mystery, with a great hosts. A perfect podcast for a roadtrip!

    Impressive historic journalism
The information in this podcast was fascinating, well researched and authentic. The challenges created in WWII were unimaginable. I learned a lot and my eyes have been opened. Prayers that humanity is never in that place again.

    Good listen
A piece of history I was never aware of! Good storytelling, awesome interviews and the right amount of humor to make the subject a little lighter. The music is top notch!

    Amazing journalism
I have seen some people say that parts of the podcast feel like a wild goose chase. THATS THE POINT. It is a mystery that has not been addressed by many people! Of course there will be speculation or dead ends. That’s why it is a real mystery! If you want something contrived, go watch your comfort show.
  • Ogo Mbo
    Fascinating and deeply researched
I am familiar with this history, so was interested to hear this podcast. It’s very well researched and presented in a clear and compelling manner. I was impressed by how well the hosts took complex history and made it accessible to the average listener. In addition to the main theme of “who killed King Boris,” it’s a nuanced discussion of the difficult situation Bulgaria was in during WWII, the hard choices the King made, and the outcomes of those choices, including the protection of Bulgaria’s Jewish population from the death camps.
  • JessW84
    So much speculation
The host is fun with added humor throughout but there is a lot of unnecessary speculation. “It’s the Germans” followed by a lot of talk why it’s the Germans to only be concluded with an interview with the family who says here are all the reasons it isn’t the Germans. I get they are trying to stretch this into a multi episode story but just seemed it could have been shorter or laid out differently.

If you love true crime …
How did i not know about this story?!! I love the host Becky. She is witty and charming…. Someone you could have a pint with. She does great job describing the people and places she encounters. The interviews are relevant and sometimes funny. She does great incorporating the history and events of WWII to the audience as we move through the story. You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy this podcast! I hope Becky and her team do more

    Intrigue
Such an interesting story that I never knew I wanted to hear. It was done seemingly with care to the children of the King, but did not shy away from controversy. The audio quality and music are also top notch.

    Loving this!
I am thoroughly enjoying this podcast. Great storytelling. I have discovered my love of history, thank you! And I love the quirky humor.
  • tartme
    Thank you
Loved the history no one has heard because well I don’t know. It was a part of WW II when someone stood up the Hitler about the Jews. Why did I. It hear about this in my history class. Great research.
  • MissSR13
    So well done
I waited so I could binge this. It’s a beautiful and complex story, well told with humor and reverence in equal measure.

    Great Series but..,
Great Podcast. Except that Tessa Dunlop is just awful.

    Wonderful listen
What a lovely series. Well researched, appropriate humor, and very respectfully done. I loved it!
  • Alphafrankie
    Historical mystery that rivals Shakespeare
Fascinating historical perspective. Fun to listen to with lots of details and lots of human interest. It’s an incredible period of history in which we know so much but also know so little, especially for those countries that disappeared behind the iron curtain. Hearing from witnesses, experts, and interviews with the adult children of King Boris within the context of World War II and the threat to Jewish populations, and anyone who sought to protect them, while trying to solve the murder of the King was an incredible journey. We too often forget how complex life is. War and constant danger make it even more complex. The podcast ebbs and flows with complexities but most of all with empathy for the children, their country and the many people. I closed my eyes and let the investigative lines carry me into the past, the mystery and the history. Wonderfully investigated and narrated.

    Riveting!
This series is so well researched and produced. I was there for all the twists and turns. I binged the whole series in a day. Great job to the entire team! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

    Great Podcast
It is a great podcast. Interesting historical story and professional investigation is heard from episode 1. I like the clear English narration including the funny part. I enjoyed listening and it is a job well done!
  • JMLSTL75
    Amazingly well-done!
I found this podcast fascinating - not just the subject, but the way it is laid out as a story. Very good research, and hearing from his children made it even better. Thank you for telling an important story that deserved to be told.

    Glued to my seat!
Absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t have imagined how into this would get. Started out listening for background distraction and quickly became fascinated and immersed in the story.

    Phenomenal
I’m not even a person wildly interested in history. But truly this is the podcast equivalent of “I couldn’t put it down!” It’s so well researched and perfectly told. I cannot wait for more!

    More of Becky
I want more of Becky Milligan’s work. This was a superb investigation and well written script to lead us into the untold story of Maria Louise’s and Simeon’s papa.

    History coming to life
The storytelling and intimate care for history make this show truly enjoyable. I had never heard of King Boris before and frankly didn’t know much if anything about Bulgaria and the precarious position they found themselves in during WWll. I loved all the theories, testimony, insight from experts, and humor. My one qualm is that some connections seem a bit tenuous or weren’t properly explained (did they ever mention what could produce the brown spots?), but I do listen to podcasts while working or distracted so I may have missed some explanations ( :

    Excellent!
This puts into perspective how seemingly small incidents in countries we do not know much about influence the entire world. There are so many things we can learn from history.

    Entertaining adventure through history
Wish we had more podcasts like this! A murder mystery with a history lesson. A good amount of humor and facts, we learn of Bulgaria and its monarchy. Wonderful!

    When history is erased
The true crime angle is an interesting hook, but I found this series more of a cautionary tale of what happens to a country when an extreme regime tries to erase its history. The many twists and turns can be a bit exhausting, when it seems that much of the “mystery” is not so mysterious. Worth the listen to learn of a lesser known tale of WWII.
  • jnodima1
    Beautiful Storytelling
Becky Milligan has such a unique and captivating way of storytelling that had me hooked until the very end. I’ve never heard this part of WWII, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to learn it from this podcast. Very well done!

    Butterfly King Soars
Exactly Right is raising the bar yet again! Becky got me caught in a trap! I shouldn’t be so hyped about a WWII podcast but I am enthralled.

    Amazing
One of the best podcasts I have ever listened to! In a country and area that there is so little known about. Didn’t want it to end.
