Neddy NickersonThe Spark Joy Game in Nancy Drew’s AtticYes, after a lifelong relationship with Nancy Drew and the Stratemeyer Syndicate, this podcast is what I need. I think of Horatio Alger, the predecessor of Edward Stratemeyer. Somebody once said of him—because so many people were dismissive of his works, I guess popular literature or worse—that he is the Homer of this culture. There’s just so much to unpack in the manipulation of these archetypes and cultural icons, so thank goodness we have this podcast to begin unpacking all the stuff in the attic. I guess Nancy actually did that too, didn’t she? Ever since she started, she didn’t get paid, but she kept souvenirs. It’s like this podcast is unpacking almost a century’s worth of souvenirs. Somebody’s gotta do it. Thank you! This podcast has also helped me understand why these stories are so strangely compelling. It’s not just about Nancy Drew—it’s about how these symbols and tropes reflect the stories we tell ourselves and share. The fun isn’t over when you finish reading the book. It’s only just begun because then it’s time for the podcast. That extended “kick” reminds me of reading Jane Austen, where the joy doesn’t end with the book—you dive into feminist and economic and political literary criticism, and then the movies, and more. So the after-party keeps going. Hopefully, there will be more podcasts like this because they’re too much fun. I guess you could call it criticism, but not in the negative sense—just in the sense of really talking about it. How long can these reviews even be? I wonder if I’m getting close to the length of one of the two-page summaries given to ghostwriters! Though, as Mildred Wirt Benson once pointed out, shorter summaries might have been better—leaving room to add storms or twists wherever they fit. Anyway, signing off now. These podcasts are a joy!

NYXgurlFun and InformativeI really enjoy this podcast! I listen to it when walking my dog and working on my car. I actually didn’t read a whole lot of the classic Nancy Drew mysteries when I was young because I found them kind of dated and difficult to follow, so I feel validated when listening to how wild some of them turned out to be. I also appreciate the hosts examining the racial and class themes of the original and 60’s mysteries, because that stuff would have flown over my head as a kid, and I always find the social messaging of children’s books to be fascinating. Recently, I found out that the original 30’s text of Lilac Inn, a book I tried to read multiple times as a youngster but couldn’t get into, was evidently so racist that it inspired the 60’s rewrites. Thus, I think it’s very relevant for the hosts to discuss points of sexism, racism, and classism even if other listeners don’t like the attention called to those details. As a big fan of the Files and the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys crossovers, I also find it noteworthy that the 80s and 90s book lessened the amount of Bess fat-shaming and placed much more focus on her being a flirt and boy-crazy—not sure what that implies. Regardless, I deeply appreciate this podcast for what it is and would like to thank both of the hosts for their hard work and attention to detail!

5porkchop52 Woke White GirlsI want to like this podcast but the 2 privileged woke girls keep comparing 1930’s America to today. Almost a hundred years have gone by. Get over it. Nancy had gurl power way ahead of your time. Stop looking for nonsense you two privileged brats and grow up.

am_bowLots of negativityI’m only on episode 3 so I may update my review later, but for two people that supposedly love Nancy Drew, there’s a lot of negativity to your commentary! Lots of tearing everything apart and nothing positive about anything. They're fictional books. Not everything is going to be perfect or reality. Just enjoy the books/games.

LMCisReadingExcellent!Adore this podcast! So soothing and insightful, I appreciate the variety of Nancy media being discussed, the thoughtful research presented, and the genuine enthusiasm of both hosts (while also incorporating a critical perspective when needed). Show lengths are perfect for listening while cooking, etc. Listening to Regular Nancy Drew feels like having coffee with friends and I’m looking forward to many more episodes!

Mooshkin16Highly RecommendedI’ve been reading Nancy Drew since I was a kid. I’ve really enjoyed the book summaries and reviews (I only listen after I read the book myself, as the reviews are very detailed). They review a variety of Nancy Drew incarnations, including the movies. The hosts really do their research about Nancy Drew and it is fun to listen to their conversation. They are lively and have good insight.

LindsayRoseElizI can hear the love!I’m so glad I found this podcast. I love all of the episodes, but particularly the history-oriented ones (Carolyn Keene, HeR Interactive, etc.) and the game reviews. Kori and Becky bring a profound sense of love and joy to their conversations. I especially appreciate that they deliver critiques/criticisms of books, games, and whatnot in a thoughtful, respectful, and humorous way. The podcast is a real celebration of this much beloved character, and I can’t wait to keep listening!
