National Park After Dark

3,324

Hosted by two friends who share a passion for the wilderness and a fascination with what can go wrong there, each week hosts Danielle and Cassie explore the darker side of our National Parks and explore these treasured places in a whole new way - because behind the iconic arches and towering trees lie layered histories, grisly encounters, extraordinary stories of survival, tragic ends and so much more. But it isn’t always chills and thrills. By sharing inspiring tales and their desire for protecting our planet’s wild places, they hope the show will inspire listeners to lace up their own hiking boots and take a walk into the wild to create meaningful adventures of their own.

    LOVE this podcast
Have been a listener and fan for years. LOVE the show and appreciate you sticking to your morals and ethics. If people have a problem with you being “political” they don’t need to listen. They clearly don’t care about the NPS, given that thousands of park rangers have lost their jobs and the current admin wants to privatize the national parks 🙄 thanks for everything you do 🩷

Used to really like this podcast.
You’ve lost a subscriber. I’ve been listening since the early days and really liked the stories. I came back for the stories. Then they decided to become social justice warriors by interject politics and the latest hot button issue without actually informing themselves. I don’t want to be preached to about racism, sexism or homophobia, I want good stories. My last straw was their comment on the latest episode about “straight white men” never facing consequences. Get out of your mainstream media bubble and just stick to telling good stories.

    Enough already!
I’ve been a loyal listener from the beginning and loved the show’s original focus on true crime. Sadly, it’s shifted into more of a personal platform for political commentary, which feels off-brand and often performative. The inconsistency between the messaging and the hosts’ actions—especially around travel—is hard to ignore. I mean, selling ecotourism trips while disparaging air travel? Rules for thee and not for me? I say this as someone who really valued the show and is disappointed by its current direction.

    Great Podcast
Great podcast. Not sure why some people are claiming they are being political? They are reporting and shared direct stories from rangers on what is going on in national parks. Seems pretty relevant. I also love the stories about black history and women history. Thank you for doing that! I don’t like having to listen to ads during subscriber episodes though since I’m paying for those. That is pretty frustrating.

    Progressive Dribble
What a waste of time! If you like your history sabotaged by woke nonsense, more power to you. For me, there are other podcasts that are actually true to the premise - this one is a not!

    Sorry not listening
When you use pronouns. So woke and the country is done. Unfollowing.

    I Wanted to Like It
I was so excited when I first heard about the podcast. I love the National Parks, being outside and storytelling. Sadly, these women are uniformed, can’t pronounce words correctly to save their lives and speak in that horrible millennial nasal whine. I listened to about the first ten episodes, but could no longer take their politics and bashing anything with which they disagree. One episode they bashed the US education system for not teaching them world history. I guess they were asleep during 6th, 7th and 10th grade history! Actually, to listen to them leads one to believe that maybe they slept through all of their school years.

This is my favorite podcast. I really enjoy the diversity of topics and often find myself feeling inspired to get outside after listening.

    Best Podcast Ever!
My boyfriend introduced me to this podcast with the Half Dome episode and I loved it SO much. I always deep-dive into each story. I love supporting women who support women! They are beautiful storytellers and are gracious about handling (sometimes) hard topics. I share this pod with everybody I know. I’ve learned so much about powerful people, national parks, and more! Now I want to visit them all, but watch my back ;) ! Much love to these girls for sparking my love of nature and hiking back up again!!!

    Uneducated and Unresearched
The year without a summer episode - blaming oil companies for global warming is such an uneducated comment I can’t even believe it. Our ancestors long ago decided that we had to be dependent on fossil fuels, it’s not something that can be changed overnight. And where do you think the batteries for electric cars come from? How much earth is destroyed to make them? When these batteries need to be disposed of where do you think they go? How much OIL do you think is used to create and then fill wind turbines with to make “clean” energy? How much ground and animals do you think are destroyed to put them up? Please do some research before making ignorant statements putting blame on one source. Yes, we need to be aware of climate change but don’t spread misinformation and bad habits of blaming one thing that you yourself aren’t willing to give up. So unless you decide to start recording this podcast and flying to your different destinations using electricity you produce by running on a gerbil wheel, maybe don’t say stupid comments.

This podcast is amazing and so are the women creating it!
I love this podcast! Danielle and Cassie are doing a wonderful job of giving us an entertaining yet educational show! I’m so excited for their new show to be released!

    Answer to gopmanda
No one who loves nature and our national parks could possibly support Trumpie and his destruction of our environment and national parks. Love this podcast. Don’t be bothered by trolls like Gopmanda. They are feeling the uprising against his greed and stupidity.this administration.

    Could improve
I recently discovered this podcast and decided to give it a try. So far it’s been good, with a few exceptions. I am only 5-6 episodes in, I really enjoy the stories, but sometimes I feel like the ladies fail to go the extra mile and do some research on the details. For example, how could you not mention that Steven Stayner died tragically only at 24 years old, after all he endured? Also, I can not stand the way the girls talk! You can’t convince me that one of them is not Kim Kardashian! The other one talks like someone has her by the throat. And I thought they said they were veterinarians, but I hate to say, sometimes they don’t sound very intelligent… Some of the things they say… Like the conversation between sister and step sister about Fahrenheit and Celsius 🤦🏻‍♀️. But, as I said, I am only a few episodes in, so hopefully with practice they become more polished.

    🖤🖤
I love this podcast and I love listening every week. Don’t listen to the haters. Y’all are doing a great job and I will continue to follow the podcast. Also for the people talking about ads. If they bother you that much pay for the ad free content so these creators can continue to make the money they do from the ads that bother you so much. This is their job they deserve to be paid.

    Making it political
    Of course.

    Disappointed
I was excited to find a podcast about national park stories. Instead it’s just two immature women complaining inbetween ads. No thanks.
  • gopmanda
Used to be a good podcast
I have heard the hosts say a couple times they are not making their podcast a political platform. BUT that is a flat out lie. They have pushed their political views more times lately than I care to admit that I have entertained. I can tell they are fueling the fire with some of their comments so I will be unfollowing this show. P.S. the respectful way to address any president of the United States is to call them President and then their last name. I really feel ashamed that I used to recommend your podcast.

    Wonderful Supporters is NPs
I’ve listened to this podcast for several years, and highly recommended it. Both hosts are supporters of the National Parks, which are vital for millions of park visitors and especially important for the plants and animals. I’ve learned so much about our US National Parks and other parks around the world.

Get back in touch with nature 💚
You girls are doing momentous work in respecting all living things and the value each holds individually! From a blade of grass to a human being, we are the life on this earth, and you both have brought me back in touch with that! So thank you and never stop doing this great work!
  • nortelchick
    Fantastic
I found NPAD after hearing them on an episode of Tooth and Claw and have fallen completely in love. They’re so down to earth and real it’s like sitting around with my friends just catching up and listening to stories around a campfire while backpacking. I absolutely love that you can search for episodes on their website by the name of the park! Before my husband and I go to a national park we search some of the episodes and make sure to see places and points that are highlighted in their stories. Love you girls so much and how real, silly, and soulful you both are!
  • Danielle8287
    Love NPAD!
An easy and entertaining way to learn about the strange/scary happenings in our beloved national parks. Cassy and Danielle have a strong bond and effortless banter that makes you wish you were friends with them. The episodes are just long enough that you can knock one out in one sitting. I also love the trail tales segments! Keep up the amazing work, ladies!

    Love this show!
Just found this pod a few months ago and have been binging it ever since. Great content, interesting stories with factual history of our national parks. I love the outdoors and really appreciate this pod. The girls are hilarious when they banter back and forth and I always laugh when the ever growing “list” is mentioned. I live in CT and have only been to Grand Canyon ntl park but want to go to more eventually. I mostly frequent state parks here in New England
  • weh04
    Content Interesting but . . . .
I enjoy the stories that are being told but, I am sorry to say, the presentation is horrible. They are either clearly reading a script or are off on a discussion full of mispronunciations, grammatical errors and teenager sounding voices. I think with work, this could be a really good podcast but it seems like more schooling and professional training is necessary.

    Love this show!!!
I’ve been listening to NPAD for about a year now after my husband first introduced me to it. As lovers of hiking/national and state parks/the great outdoors, and as a huge fan of true crime myself, he thought I would love the stories that Cassie and Danielle share in each episode and he was completely right! I’ve become truly obsessed with tuning in to episodes as I walk on my walking pad, clean the house, and drive to various destinations. I cannot recommend it enough!
  • eholnope
    Love this pod
I love NPAD! Literally my only issue is that the hosts misspeak rather often. They use words incorrectly at least a few times per episode. Ex: “he interjected himself into their lives” when it should be “he inserted himself into their lives”. the words they choose sound similar, but don’t mean the same thing.
  • hundreds of listens
    LOL and Great.
Great work. Laughed out loud at pale, black choker, and about to kill someone, and ending with “Watch you back”. You could scare Nino Brown. Great show.
  • Hghuug
    Thank you
I love Cassie and Danielle. They are genuine and excellent story tellers and I love the variety from true crime, survival, history and Trail Tales. Your friendship and banter is genuine and fun. So glad I found this podcast .

Most recent episode is completely mislabeled ?
Most recent episode is completely mislabeled ? It’s a story, at least the beginning, about Jake but the title says it’s about a woman. Disorganized…
  • HangryHiker
Used to be one of my favorites, ads have gotten out of hand.
10 minute ad to start the show and three breaks within the first 20 minutes. This pod used to be top of the list, hate to see it run down with ads like this.

    Swooning for NPAD
An awesome listen that is funny, informative, and makes me want to hike (while watching my back of course) 😉

    Great podcasts for the outdoorsy
Ladies I absolutely love listening to your podcast. I too love all things nature! Listening to your podcasts on those days I can’t get to the outdoors, has been a lifesaver. Keep up with the amazing stories, research, and listener tails. 🖤

What a special, eternal, memento from Ian. I absolutely love the music. Thank you for sharing your story’s this last episode. Loved listening. ♥️

    Great show!
I love this show! The hosts are great storytellers. I learn so much about our parks, history, new places, interesting and inspiring people and new books to read. Thank you NPAD!!!

    Insufferable
Was looking for something to listen to while knitting and this is not it.

    too many ad breaks
I like this show. But I genuinely can't listen to it sometimes because of how they do ads. It's normal to do 2-3 breaks with 2-3 ads for each break... They do like 7 breaks every episode with just one ad each, interrupting the flow of the podcast badly. Drives me absolutely bonkers.

    Too far
Usually a fan of the podcast but Cassie’s apparent infatuation with Luigi mangione went a bit too fan girl. I thought you all were all about being independent/strong women? Swooning over a handsome murderer seems to be off brand even if it was a poorly timed joke—your intro to this episode recognized the massacre in NOLA but you didn’t feel it might be smart to cut a joke about glorifying the cold blooded killing of an innocent person (1% or not)? Sure you won’t read this, but you’ve lost a listener.

    My fav pod
My absolute favorite podcast! My brother in law introduced me back in 2021 and I’ve been hooked since. Love the stories, the banter, love it all!
  • 4kids2cats1dog
    The Lugi comment.
You lost me on the Lugi comment. He is a murderer and not someone to be hailed as a hero.
  • TS the Language Lady
Usually love it, but not today.
Ok. Usually I love the podcast, but the show from 1/13, not so much. Let’s not glorify Luigi Mangioni. No one should be murderered. Period. Gun violence and murder is never ok. Please think about what you’re saying before you say it to hundreds of thousands of people. Ughh.

Been here since the very beginning, and the love I have for these girls and their story telling skills is insane! I always felt so drawn to them like they’re my sisters. I even got to talk to Danielle and tell her things i never thought I’d be able to say directly to her. Cass I’m here for you too! I cheer up getting to hang with them especially in the subscriber community. 🥰Despite the podcast having darker story topics sometimes- they do so so well at keeping it PG-13 This is the only podcast I will listen to with my 7 year old because they are so mindful about the way they talk & how much they cuss as well!! Don’t ever stop doing what you girls are doing!!!!💜 can’t wait to finally MEET YALL 😭🥰
  • JBirkenstock
    Obsessed!!
Started listening yesterday and already 12 episodes in. It’s like a book I can’t put down. Edge of your seat story telling with perfect amounts of witty side banter/comments. I can’t figure out how I missed this. Even though some of these are horrific stories, it has reignited my dream of working for the parks department.
  • Irishgal44
    My favorite
Love the story telling…so great. I also love the banter between the hosts now and then. It adds a personal touch. I look forward to every Monday when a new episode is released.
  • Gisele.o_jello
    Love it so much
Discovered this podcast recently and jumped right in. I love the topics they cover and how much research they do ahead of time. Although people complain about them interjecting in the storyline I think it makes it more personal and it’s easier to connect to these faceless voices. Put my bf onto this podcast and we listen every week!!!
  • MorbidOutdoorsPodcast
    been a listener for years
I love learning facts about parks and our public lands. And I love the mix of stories/topics from NPAD. You guys are the ones who inspired me to start my own pod! Much love from Elyse at Morbid Outdoors Podcast! ❤️

    Terrible story tellers
Interesting story but terrible story tellers. Tried to listen to the Madness in McCarthy episode after reading a positive review on it but couldn’t make it through the first episode. They take forever to get to the point and continuously interject.
  • Gear smear
Used to be a better show…
One of these hosts is so condescending to the other. The one with the deep voice is kind of a jerk.
  • BMBHLH
    Wish there was less swearing
I love this podcast and I try to only listen to certain stories around my kids that seem like they’d be appropriate. The stories like the survivor stories for example. Otherwise I wear my headphones. Well I thought they would be appropriate until the f bombs started rolling on. I wish there wasn’t as much swearing and it was more respectful for families
