Pop Fiction Women

In Pop Fiction Women we deep-dive into the complicated women of books, movies and TV shows, along with the women that bring them to life behind the scenes. Think Fleabag and Phoebe Waller Bridge, Normal People and Sally Rooney, and so much more. In each episode you can expect us to: * Break down the protagonist as we ask what makes her complicated? * Identify the best scenes, which can mean sweetest, funniest, or most badass. Anything we love. * Recount the cringiest scenes. The ones that make you squirm. Sometimes it’s self-sabotage, sometimes it’s growth, but it’s always part of the process of becoming our complicated selves. * Play arm-chair therapist in What’s Your Damage, Heather? An homage to the iconic line in Winona Ryder’s Heathers, we discuss how these characters got to be the way they are. * “What She Said” - the segment where we scour every essay and interview with the women behind the scenes and share some of our favorite first person quotes. Real life is as interesting as fiction here. * Look into our crystal ball and ponder where these characters are six months later and five years later. Typically, Kate gets very real and Carinn gets buck wild. * Provide a takeaway, aka that part in the podcast where we try to sound deep. We leave you with some parting wisdom, challenge each other with thought-provoking questions inspired by the work, and urge you to “stay complicated.”

    Small note -
Appreciate the review of Anora and the connections to pretty woman but for the LOVE of god how many times can you say “yeah, yeah , yeah”or “yes” in a row? Especially when the ideas seems to be conflicting at the moment and the other podcaster isn’t receiving the “yeah” to her point and feels misunderstood. Sorry to nitpick ladies but it’s a bit jarring as a listener

Stop talking at the same time!
Good content but hard to listen to when you keep saying “yeah” while the other is talking

    weird takes…
started listening bc i wanted a podcast to recap Tell Me Lies with. listen, i know we can’t all be great at analyzing tv dramas, but these ladies have some seriously strange takes. the idea that one lady keeps pushing that lydia’s brother wasn’t actually a r*pist feels deeply offensive as well as plain ignorant considering what we SAW ON THE SHOW. do better, because a theory like that feels nasty towards women and all survivors.

    Quiet
I had my volume in my car up all the way to near these ladies. I’m referencing the “Tell Me Lies Bananna” episode. Too much of a whisper. Please speak into mic. Otherwise, fun podcast!

The “hot guy” is actually a repressed gay, if you think about it.

    SPOILERS
if you’re going to spoil plotlines to completely separate shows WARN US to skip ahead. Just wrecked a major plot point of a separate show. Not cool.

    i like it but...
im giving 4 stars because i think its evil when people give low stars because of small things. i like this pod, & i like that they do a lot of shows no one else does, i could not find a single other podcast doing tell me lies recaps at all. & i like that they are two women discussing!! so many include a man & sometimes i do not want to hear a mans opinion on female characters. here is where my criticism comes in though. i do think there is something to be said for doing a little more research on the show or watching the episodes a few times or taking notes before the podcast. there are a ridiculous amount of things they miss that arent like they just didnt bring it up, its like they ACTUALLY missed it. its hard to listen to a recap podcast that feels like it doesnt even know what happened at times. my second/last critique, i think sometimes specifically kate? (i dont actually know who is who for sure because you never do an actual introduction saying im kate & im carinn) but in the recent white lotus recaps, i get very put off by the throwing away of characters because "you dont know them" "you cant relate" "thats not your experience" i get that, but just because you do not recognize a character doesnt mean its not working. i think tv is a great opportunity to get lost in characters you have never see or experienced before. i dont know it rubs me wrong, especially because the characters you were throwing away were mostly the WOMEN because you said you only recognized "the finance bros" which are arguably the worst characters on the show. so i just wanted to bring that to your attention, because it comes across poorly on a show thats supposed to be about understanding complex women in media.

    Entertaining
LOL … these ladies sound like they hit the blunt right before they recorded the podcast…

too many tangents, not enough from the actual show
I really liked their recaps of episode 5-7 of tell me lies, but i listened to their recap of 8-9 today and it was horrible. they barely spent any time talking about the actual show and instead reminisced about their own college days. They also have no real outline to their podcast which is not great when they’re talking about tv shows…there’s so much to say about tell me lies and they missed about all of it.

    Inviting, intelligent & intimate
Kate & Carinn not only discuss amazing books, series, movies etc… they also have amazing interviews with authors, creators & poets. The women are intelligent, creative and funny! I love the strong female perspectives and everything this podcast delivers.

    Happiest Season Review
You really need to seek additional information on speaking about Queer issues if you are going to put it out to the public. When you say I was trying to figure out who had the man role and who had the woman role about females in a relationship..... omg. If a movie does a good job writing these women and aren’t just plugging them into a Hetro movie.. the are both the women obviously! They should be writing two fully formed women with whatever characteristics that are attracted and in love with other women.

So This is what they talk about...
Too many tangents and hardly a mention of the title material. Did they even watch the show they talk about? It’s like overhearing that mundane boring conversation going on at the table for two next to you at the crowded cafe. I gave it 15 minutes. Blood came out of my ears- so I stopped.

    Idiotic reviews
Who are these two idiots. These two bird brains spent the entire time Talking about how bad I may destroy you is all negative. I honestly feel like they’re pandering to the male perspective. Nothing but criticism I honestly spent the entire time imagining what it would look like if a truck drove by and ran them over and it brought a smile to my face

    Conversations with Emily Giffin
I loved listening to your interview with one of my favorite authors! Understanding how she develops characters and addresses the many layers of human emotion is inspiring. It was a treat to listen to her share her process and how she incorporates relevant issues into her work. The conversation felt organic, real, and fun. Well done!

specific to Normal People TV review
Lots of words, not saying much. fake or ridiculous outrage/disbelief regarding details of the show. couldn't make it through an episode, tried 3. Eyeroll.

    Normal people review
I came to change my review! I decided to keep listening and things changed! I think the first 2 episode review wasn’t well! However it’s gotten great now.

    Normal People review
I LOVE this podcast’s concept. Unfortunately I got lost in the Episode 1&2 segment because one of the hosts kept get stuck on trivial complaints that weren’t that interesting. I’d rather hear criticisms that give some new insight into the substance of the story’s themes, characters, etc. The gratuitous negativity was irritating.
  • CourtneyMc22
    Yeeesh
I was so happy to find a podcast that was doing a detailed exploration of Normal People, especially 2 women, since so many of the voices in TV podcasts seem to be male. But wow, the contempt for this show by one of the hosts is down right odd and off-putting. I’m great with critical analysis, etc., but this is crazy over the top. What’s the point if you aren’t even open to another person’s point of view who liked the show and has equally well thought out opinions on it. I get the feeling it’s one of those “I will hate anything that’s not the book” situations, which is unfortunate and makes unbiased analysis of the show impossible.

    Normal people review
I was so excited to see a multi episode review of Normal People. It started out good enough then it turned into a “massacre”. One of you was lovely and gave an informed review. The other one of you sounded so incredibly ignorant. What year is it? Who cares 😂 What were they doing when they were standing up? Really? I had to turn it off. You sounded argumentative without any intelligence to back it up. What a shame. The other lady needs to call me and talk about this brilliant show. And get a new podcast buddy.

Thank you so much for sharing your perspectives on one of the classics of our generation. Thanks also for recapping some of the points Nora made during her commencement address at Wellesley - so fitting for this discussion and great reminders for us all!

Carinn and Kate are so smart. Their podcast is a joy. They’ve introduced me to pop fiction— sally Rooney!!!!— and they have changed the way I consume women characters and creators. What a wonderful way to spend time with these great women and their complicated subjects.

THE podcast we NEED right now!!
THIS is the podcast I have felt the world has needed for so long. Smart, funny, interesting women talking about the complicated female protagonists of some of the best books, movies and TV shows. So far there is a great mix of classic rom coms and old favorites (who can resist When Harry Met Sally and Love Actually?) as well as modern, edgier choices (Fleabag, Normal People by Sally Rooney and Sleeping With Other People). It has something for everyone. The segments are interesting and fun (love the “crystal ball” were they speculate on the protags future and “what she said” where they dive into first person quotes from the amazing women behind the scenes). Carinn and Kate have a genuine rapport and keep it moving in an engaging and dynamic way. Truly a MUST listen!! Subscribe and download now - you can thank me later!

    I’m hooked on Pop!
Listened to episode 1 and loved it! I now have a new perspective on When Harry Met Sally, from two different points of view. The dissection of the characters and the story really gave me a new take on the movie. I really enjoyed the behind-the-scene facts, side notes, and the crystal ball segment too! Now I want to rewatch the movie! Thank you Daniel for adding Pop Fiction Women to my podcast library! I look forward to listening to more episodes.

With so many podcasts out there that just recycle other people’s ideas, and I’m so excited to find a new podcast with fresh, smart insights. This is the first podcast I’ve listened to since the start of The Rewatchables that makes me think about all the future episodes I want to hear! Great job Carinn and Kate!
