Art and Labor

86

Art & Labor chronicles the stories of social justice organizing within the arts. We hope to center the human cost of the “art world” and advocate for fair labor practices for artists, assistants, fabricators, docents, interns, registrars, janitors, writers, editors, curators, guards, performers, and anyone doing work for art & cultural institutions.

    More Marxist than thou
This show has great potential but the presenters get caught in vortex of anxiety about whether they are leftist enough. It’s a occasionally a relevant question but don’t let it get in the way of actual thinking.

It is a pleasure to hear these very human voices discuss the inhuman nature of navigating urban living as an artist while trying to avoid excessive taxation of the body and soul. Please feel free to hold off on releasing episodes when there's slow news, or if you're building towards a broad topic! You have a cult following at this point, we will wait for you.

    Great show!!
I appreciate the unfiltered disdain for landlords and gentrification and NY Times and yuppies and hipsters and yipsters (yuppie/hipsters)

    Thank you!
This podcast rocks! I have been a listener since 2019 and I am a big fan. Lucia and OK (Sarah and Darcie now too) are super evolved in the way they think about art and politics. You have been educational for me about labor politics and aesthetic issues. As someone who studies studio art in college, this podcast helps me grapple with topics that get talked about by professors and people online who are versed in art history and contemporary art. It also helps me position myself in the world as an art worker which never gets talked about at my school (how art exists in the world outside of college). Lucia and OK are critical about the stuff they talk about and their ideas are deeply thought out. I appreciate being able to learn from you guys and recommend this podcast to anybody.

    Important topics, weak analysis
The topics explored in this podcast are almost always worth talking about. I find much of the analysis to be a kind of ill-considered stream of consciousness type thing. They often scratch the surface of important topics but fail to deliver thoughtful analysis. It seems like they don’t prepare very well.

    Insightful and Relatable
Witty and insightful reflections of culture and systems! OK and Lucia are brilliant, super smart and relatable. It’s like learning through conversations among friends with interesting guests and themes and memes.

    Very good
Love hearing about how cursed Bushwick is as I sit alone working on freelance illustration in Bushwick. Dank memes as well.

Came for the Art, stayed for the Labor
One of the most important podcasts to come out since podcasting became a Thing™️. I don’t even work in the arts anymore but every episode compels me to consider new viewpoints, and reconsider previous notions I’ve had about the field. The hosts are delightful and hilarious. This podcast gives me hope that a better world is possible.

    valley girls?
after working in the museum/art field for 30 years as an art handler, i was really interested in listening to this podcast. unfortunately, i was so distracted by the constant use of the word “like”, the valley girl cadence, giggling, and unprofessionalism of the hosts, i couldn’t even get thru one program.

    Fabulous Labor Cast
The worst part about your twenties is realizing that you’re a baby who doesn’t know anything. The best part is finding podcasts like this that use an intersection of theory, cultural know-how, and personal experience to help foster the leftism roiling around your curious little mind. Excellent cast.

    Good Podcast
The world needs more labor podcasts, so this is cool.

    Focused and Sure of itself
This is one of the few podcasts that I’ve listened to that stays on point at all times. It’s pushed me to think differently about the production of art. OK an Lucia are witty personalities that are very welcoming to their listeners. They just sound like great people.

    Just discovered this podcast...
And it's always a good time! The hostesses with the mostesses have a good chemistry and the cultural commentary is always top notch. Excellent and recommended. J.G. Host of Parallax Views

    Yes please!
Don’t be deterred by the “Art” in Art & Labor - it’s a refreshing, albeit NYC centric, left perspective. Think early Chapo - but funnier, with fewer penises and a stronger focus on tangible labor issues (instead of labor playing second string to a critique of the media meta-narrative of the moment).

    Really great!
Everytime I listen, I learn something(s) new. And I'm completely engaged. There's news, there's history, there's context, there's entertainment. OK Fox and Lucia Love are smart and incisive chroniclers. And they have great chemistry!

    Please Listen!
